Outdoor Art Classes in Ethiopia

For the children in Hawzien, Ethiopia, having art classes is far from a given.

Thanks to the support of the #Peter Ustinov Foundation, the Waldorf school “Bruh Tesfa” (Bright Future) is able to offer all children art and crafts classes. A fully paid art teacher, two assistants, and numerous local artists such as potters, carpenters, or basket weavers teach the children additionally once a week. The school places great importance on employing local teachers and assistants because helping people help themselves is the key to success. It is evident from the children’s expressions how much joy they derive from playfully creating figures and small vessels for daily use out of traditional black clay. These are the initial steps of a careful approach, and as the children grow older and more experienced with the materials, their artworks are fired and used in everyday life.
