Support for the Him Shikar Carène-Ustinov School in Nepal
Rebuilding the School After a Devastating Natural Disaster
Ustinov Foundation projects
About the project
Goal
A New School for Nele
- In 2015, Nepal was struck by a severe earthquake that nearly completely destroyed the village of Nele.
- Nele, located about 60 km from Kathmandu, has a population of 5,000, including 600 school-age children who were taught in emergency tents after the earthquake.
- In collaboration with the Swiss Carène Foundation and the association Help for Nepal, a new school building was to be constructed to provide the children of Nele with education under decent conditions once again.
- Paul Metzner, a dedicated Swiss construction expert experienced in rebuilding, and Käthi Flümann from the association "Help for Nepal," a mountain guide and project initiator, have shown unparalleled commitment and a big heart for the future of the people of Nele.
The project
Creating a Place of Learning Together
- Under the supervision of Paul Metzner and with the enthusiasm of the residents of Nele, the new school was built using traditional methods with mud, stone, and wood.
- Additionally, earthquake-resistant supports were installed to protect the school building from potential future natural disasters.
Success
A School as a School Should Be
- Nele's new school is now even larger and more beautiful: it has 11 classrooms, equipped with spacious wooden desks and benches.
- The new building also finally includes sanitary facilities with a total of 6 toilets.
- Even a small residence for the teacher, who previously had to live in temporary accommodation, has been built.
- In addition to the school, nearly 300 houses have been rebuilt with funding from the Help for Nepal association, providing the people of Nele with a safe and stable living environment.
