Every Donation Counts! New Locust Plague Threatens Livelihoods in Ethiopia
November 19, 2020
A new locust plague threatens the livelihoods in Ethiopia. The situation is alarming: According to a report from the GRFC (Global Report on Food Crisis), this year 8.5 million people in Ethiopia are experiencing food insecurity.
This means they are starving! Over 80% of the people in the Ethiopian district of Hawzien depend on agriculture for their livelihood. The Waldorf School Fink Hawzien is located in the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia. Already in June 2019, locust swarms invaded the eastern and northern regions of Ethiopia, devouring the crops.
The work of an entire season is destroyed, and with it the livelihood of the people there. On October 15 of this year, the locusts reappeared in the Tigray region and once again devastated the lush, good harvest. Again, the people were unprepared, and all desperate attempts to defend the harvest with smoke, drums, and whistles failed. Once more, the Fink Hawzien School is providing food to over 500 families and people in the neighborhood. The Peter Ustinov Foundation has set up an emergency fund for the affected regions of East Africa. We need your help to continue providing a future perspective for the children and their families. Every donation counts!
