Creating Opportunities: A Preschool for 75 Children
Ustinov Foundation projects
About the project
Goal
Education for the Youngest.
- In partnership with SOLidarity with WOmen in DIstress (SOLWODI) Germany e.V., the Sir Peter Ustinov Foundation supports the Early Childhood Development Center (ECD) Sir Peter Ustinov School in Butere, Kenya.
- This preschool educates approximately 75 children from extremely impoverished backgrounds, including children of single mothers or children whose parents are unable to earn income due to illness. Many children are orphans living with close relatives.
- The goal of this support is to promote the long-term development of these children, provide care and support through social workers, fund school meals and teaching staff, and offer financial assistance to 4 selected students who will transition to primary school upon completing the ECD preschool.
Project
Nutrition, Hygiene, Education.
- During the pandemic, an additional 30 children were admitted who might have otherwise faced starvation without this opportunity.
- In hygiene training, children learn how to reduce the transmission of diseases and improve their health by maintaining proper hygiene in daily life. Additionally, teachers provide guidance to parents on improving their economic situation, such as creating savings, renting small plots of land, or growing beans and maize.
- Mothers and the local community are also involved in the project. In the long term, the goal is to create a better living environment for the children by fostering understanding and support for mothers affected by poverty-related prostitution and single mothers.
Success
Competent Care and Support for the Children.
- The social workers from SOLWODI conduct home visits to the families of ECD students, which occur regularly twice a month.
- During these visits, the children open up and share their concerns. Teachers and social workers address these concerns and discuss them in individual or group sessions.
- In the afternoons, the children also receive lessons in their mother tongue, Kiswahili. This instruction is important as it reconnects the children with their own culture.
- In addition to regular classes, the team also conducts skills training with the children.
- The “Happy Dream” ECD School collaborates with various health institutions, such as Utange Dispensary, Yeshua Medical Centre, Shimo La Tewa, and Crystal Medical Centre.
- As part of basic provision, the school children receive beans, vegetables, and rice. The entire project thus makes an important contribution to ensuring the children’s nutrition and helps protect them from malnutrition and diseases.
