About the project

Goal

Educational Equity Through Culture.

  • Pan y Arte ("Bread and Art") was founded in 1994 by the German actor and author Dietmar Schönherr with the mission to improve equal opportunities and educational fairness for children in Nicaragua, one of the poorest countries in Central America.
  • Dietmar Schönherr and his collaborator Ernesto Cardenal, the Nicaraguan theologian and poet, agreed: Art and culture are not a luxury, but an urgent human need, just like daily bread.
  • For over 25 years, Pan y Arte has supported the work of the cultural center "Casa de los Tres Mundos" (House of the Three Worlds), which is also home to the art school "Infantilarte."

The project

Discovering and Nurturing Talents.

  • The children's art school serves as a meeting place and supports the artistic and visual cultural offerings for children from all social backgrounds who either already possess artistic talent or are looking to discover it.
  • The children's art school at the Casa de los Tres Mundos is open to children aged six to thirteen and offers two-month courses in drawing, painting, engraving, crafting, and sculpting with papier-mâché.
  • Artistic early development through playful engagement with colors and shapes motivates children to develop their own creativity.
  • In a cheerful atmosphere, children are introduced four times a week in 1.5-hour classes to themes from everyday life. The curriculum focuses on engaging with the environment and climate protection, social issues, and customs and traditions.

Success

Art and Culture for All Children

  • The art school makes a significant contribution to the cultural life of the Granada community, as art is still not part of the regular state curriculum.
  • Pan y Arte e.V., together with the Sir Peter Ustinov Foundation, ensures that in Granada, the children's art school at the Casa de los Tres Mundos remains an open center for the preservation and promotion of art and culture for all children, regardless of their background.
