Educational aid creates a safe place for learning, playing, and growing

Construction and Basic Needs

With the vision of a supportive, creative world without poverty in mind, Nassoro Mkweso and three friends founded a community center in Kigamboni, a district of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in 2007.
The four young men had suffered from poverty, abuse, and homelessness in their childhood, and especially from a lack of educational opportunities. They were supported by the community at that time and now wish to give back.
From 2016 to 2021, the Sir Peter Ustinov Foundation supported the training and talent development at the Community Center. Since early 2022, the focus has been on the protected development of the youngest children in the community.
At the beginning of 2022, the construction of the Ustinov Day Care Centre began. As the sole sponsor, the Sir Peter Ustinov Foundation is significantly supporting the construction work. The goal is to double the size of the old building to accommodate up to 100 children aged between 4 and 7 years.
The outdoor area will also be child-friendly, with ample space and equipment designed for play and exploration. In addition to child care, providing meals is also an important aspect.

In August 2022, the Ustinov Day Care Centre was inaugurated with a joyful celebration. The Mayor of Kigamboni, future students, children, parents, and many helpers who made the new building possible all joined in the festivities.
The registration phase for enrolling children in the preschool has already begun, and the response has been overwhelming. Currently, the Ustinov Day Care Centre offers a “Pre-program” for future preschoolers as part of an afternoon care service.
Starting in January 2023, with the beginning of the new school year, the new preschool will officially commence. From 7:30 AM to 1:00 PM, preschool education will be provided in two teaching blocks, including a breakfast break and a warm lunch at 1:00 PM.
With the new construction, the ownership rights of the building have been transferred to our partner, Kigamboni Community Centre, by the government.
