About the project
Goal
With joy and passion, empowering children to become real changemakers.
- Masifunde’s vision is a united society in which all people can actively shape and change their lives through holistic, high-quality education.
- The Masifunde Academy of Creativity gives children and young people access to art, music, and theatre.
- A core element is drama, music, and art classes for more than 200 children aged 10 to 19 from Walmer Township in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), South Africa.
- Guided by local artists, the children can explore their talents, inspire one another through performances and exhibitions, and build their self-confidence.
The project
A triad of creativity, education, and social support.
- Building self-confidence and a sense of identity through drama, music, and art classes.
- Educational support through targeted tutoring programs, the provision of high-quality learning materials, and the creation of a positive learning environment.
- Social support through social workers, individualized family support, and workshops and group sessions on age-relevant topics.
Success
Over 50 children on a theatre stage.
- With “Bhuti is the Beast,” the students of the Academy of Creativity staged a play about gender-based violence.
- More than 50 young people from Walmer Township in South Africa used “Bhuti is the Beast” to highlight the social challenges in their community through theatre, music, and visual arts.
